The Town of Mooresville was founded as a direct result of railroad expansion. In the year 1856, the Atlantic, Tenesee and Ohio Railroad tracks were completed in between Charlotte and Statesville, N.C. Because of the ideal location, Railroad Promoters began to campaign for the location to be a site for a depot. One man, Mr. John Franklin Moore, offered a piece of his property as a location for the depot and offered to sell more land to those interested in building a town. Shortly after, a small town named Moore’s Siding was founded. It was incorporated in 1873 as the town of Mooresville, named after Mr. John Franklin Moore.
Mooresville was a strong community, bonded together by a passionate religious community. Major efforts were taken by all residents to beautify the town of Mooresville, including a regular tree plantings. In February 1880, the Commissioners asked that all families living in the town would plant a tree on Saturday the 21st in order that “the shade beauty, and appearance of our town may be enhanced for those who come after us.”
