Terell was originally inhabited by the Catawba Tribe or “The People of the River.” They were a prominent tribe that hunted, farmed, and lived in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Catawba first encountered settlers from the Virginia and Carolina colonies, seeking furs and other Indian trade goods. In the late seventeenth century, Virginian and Carolinian traders traded with the Catawba, and the extensive trading paths through the region proved helpful to both groups. Although prominent, The Catawba tribe dwindled because of smallpox, causing them to enter a land treaty with the government. At the start of the Revolutionary War, the Catawba people fought with the colonists against the British and were then able to keep some of their land. In 1993, the tribe exchanged its land claims for $50 million dollars to use for economic development, education, and land purchases. To this day, the Catawba continue to live on a reservation near Rock Hill, S.C.
